Aftermath dark electronic music festival 2015

Aftermath 2015: Toronto’s dark electronic music festival

If Terminus was Industrial Summer CampAftermath felt like an ultra distance triathlon …through a minefield!

It was so intense.

Over the course of three days, no less than twenty-four amazing acts took to the stage in Phoenix Concert Theatre.

Aftermath was a rapid-fire drill of illustrious acts, spanning many dark electronic music genres: industrial, EBM, futurepop, synthwave, noise, darkwave, aggrotech.

Aftermath is the only festival of its kind in Toronto and I’m extremely grateful to Darker Side of Light Promotions for bringing all this amazing talent to our doorstep. The 2015 edition was a mind-bending bombardment of incredible performances.

The afterparty of the festival also marked the end of a long-standing Toronto venue, Velvet Underground, and there was a lot of feeling packed into this farewell.

From the smouldering remains of Kinetik sprung Aftermath, Toronto’s leading dark electronic music festival. Between August 27 to the 30th Darker Side of Light Productions bring you no less than 24 amazing acts from around the world.

When we visited Calgary for Terminus Festival, I was constantly amused by all the imported freaks marauding through town.

I can only hope Aftermath will likewise bring an influx of dyed & pierced weirdos into my city. I love you guys as much as I love Toronto, and I want you to have a blast during your stay.

So this one is for you, black-clad migratory droves:

Toronto is a wicked city

You’ll probably hear your fair share of drunken mourning over the lost virility of our alternative scene; I’ve heard that in every single city I’ve visited and really dislike that brand of self-deprecating bullshit.

I guarantee Toronto will be a vibrant and lively experience. Trust me: walking around and alternative parties are kinda my thing.

Consider this a weird-kid tourist guide: Wikitravel Toronto the Goth Edition.

Here’s something I wish every city had: a collection of neat stuff to do and see around town, catered for the alternative demographic, in a universal geotagged platform you can access on your phone.

Modular Synthesizer by Bit Reduction

Burning Chrome featuring Bit Reduction & Prospero electronic improv sessions

On September 12th, Bit Reduction and Prospero took to the stage at Burning Chrome.

Bit Reduction

For this performance he patched a modular synthesizer system from scratch, building the sound up cable by cable, using very little external gear. The only preconceived notion was to exploit feedback paths. As such, the result was unpredictable, harsh, and largely unpleasant – in the best of ways.

The result was an eclectic and memorable experience that left everyone calling for more. Follow Craig Renaud’s project on his soundcloud page and stay tuned for future performances.

Burning Chrome featuring live improv by Prospero & Bit Reduction

Burning Chrome returns on September 12th

What is Live Improv?

The idea is for the musician to approach the show with no pre-conceived idea’s about re-producing tracks. Some elements including sounds, instruments and patterns may have been researched but no practiced and no sequenced. There is no plan about what to play or when. What happens at the show will be all created and programmed on the fly.

BIT REDUCTION

Power noise & gritty ambient project, a mesmerizing blend of distortion and harmony.

The post-modem city – a photo tour of Toronto latrinalia

I’m not the first to marvel at bathroom graffiti and certainly not the last.

Java House – Queen St & Augusta Avenue

My fascination with these writings is hardly academic. Take it from someone who has a fruity liberal arts diploma, there is no shortage of literature on the matter. There are thousands of doctoral theses on gendered studies of bathroom graffiti, structural analyses of urban stall culture, the “dialogic nature of washroom tags” and so forth.

They even have a formal name for the subject: latrinalia – which proves nothing other than the fact that there is literally no bottom to the pit of scholarly mental masturbation. It amuses me to no end that universities fund research that essentially involves sitting on the can and philosophizing.
